First day

Well early yesterday morning rexfords surgery was performed. I went to see him after work and he was alright . The anastetic was wearing off and the pain meds kicking in. He was very unresponsive to my visit , but who could blame him. But me and my wife beth went and seen him today around lunch time. They helped him walk from his cage to the examining room so we could spend some time with him. We where able to get him to eat , just a little bit. But every little bit counts right now. The dr said he will hopefully be returning home tomorrow , depending on if they can transition him to oral meds through food. We cant wait to get him back home and help him condition himself to adjust to this big change. Any advice tips anything is appreciated and i will update soon as we find out the definate plan .

  1. What a pretty boy! We are new to this also, but have found an orthopedic dog bed helped her to stand up and sleep comfortably, a sling for us to help her stand, raised food bowls, and rugs to give her a place to get up if you have wood or tile like floors. The rugs were the most important for our pup.
The first night and week were hard (my pup is old and had amputation due to cancer) but things do get a lot better.
Almost 2 months out and what a change, so don’t get down at first. Major surgery takes a while to get over. So glad other organs were not damaged.
    Good luck!

  2. Awww Rexford, you’ll be feeling better soon! Right nownyiur a bit drugged….okay….probe very drugged!

It’s normal to not want to eat right now. He may not poop for a few days too. Drinking and peeing are important though.

You’ve gotten good advice from Jesh. It is major surgery and it takes a good two weeks of just rest and potty breaks bedore Rexford may start to show some of his sparkle to you. But once that sparkle comes back, it will be bigger and brighter than ever!!

Rexford will probably come home with Tramadol, Gabapentin, Rimadyl and an antibiotic. You may have to tweak the meds a time or two to keep him comfortable…with your Vet’s guidance of course. Mobility may take several days to really take hold, so don’t be too concerned if he needs help getting up. You can make a sling out of a towel if he needs help.

Drinkie and peeing are important, but he may not feel like eating very much and he may not poop for a few days.

My Happy Hannah was wuite restless and whiny the first couple of days. Just could not get comfortable! Sleepless nights were the norm those first days. Some dogs though, are fairly lethargic and just want to sleep (a good scenario). Every recovery is different…Every dog is different!

TRY and get some rest when you can. Rexford sou ds like he’s in good hands.

STAY CONNECTED!! We are all here to help in anyway we can.

  3. Awww, what a cutie Rexford is! Yup, slow and easy to start. Not much to add but runners work well if you have slippery floors. We have ’em all over our house 🙂 Also, don’t be surprised if Rexford has some down days after coming home. Definitely take a look at Jerry’s required reading list and don’t hesitate to ask questions! You can post in the forums with questions as well, where you will likely get answers to specific questions faster.

Sending Rexford lots of healing tripawd strength and hoping his recovery is quick and uneventful!!

    xoxo,
